Europe aims to lead the way in nature-based solutions research and policy worldwide, but the challenge now is to turn vision into lasting transformation. Supported by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe and LIFE programs, among others, cities are restoring biodiversity and tackling heatwaves, flooding and pollution. Initiatives from Eindhoven’s UNaLab water plazas to Lisbon’s network of community gardens, show how co-created nature-based approaches contribute to more inclusive and resilient societies. The new Europe Roadmap for Urban NbS shows that sustaining these gains will require stronger governance coordination between policies and local implementation, deeper inclusion, and long-term monitoring.
